BABEC co-leads the National Science Foundation funded InnovATEBIO High School Pathway Hub. DUE#2349809. The aim of the hub is to help high school teachers start and sustain workforce-oriented biotechnology programs and to incorporate biotechnology into existing biology courses. We also help state educational agencies and school districts adopt best practices for establishing CTE biotech programs.
We provide resources for the high school and community college community. Check out the resources here.
BABEC is the principle investigator for the NSF funded Work-based Biotechnology Education from High School to Community College grant DUE#2327682. This High School Co-Op project aims to enhance student engagement by facilitating deeper interactions with both high school (HS) teachers and college infrastructure, particularly counselors and Career and Technical Education (CTE) administrators. By fostering this connection, the program seeks to build awareness of opportunities available through dual enrollment at the community college (CC) level, thereby bridging the gap between HS and CC and providing students with clear educational pathways.
Additionally, the program explores the effectiveness of providing work-based learning experiences in biotechnology during the summer, to keep HS students engaged. This includes career-focused activities such as company visits and career exploration during the co-op experience. As part of the Co-Op program, HS students engage in a woven supply chain operations project (BioSCOPE) to further enrich their learning experience.
This project aims to deepen student experience by having them participate directly at the college, offering them a firsthand experience in the college setting.
What is the difference between the High School Pathways Hub and Co-Op?
High School Pathways Hub can be seen as a birds-eye view of the goals to enhance biotechnology technician education and engage underserved populations to address workforce needs and drive innovation in the biotechnology field. The High School Co-Op project focuses more on the day-to-day operational aspect of these goals. For this project, we delineate the stops along the pathway to increase awareness and recruitment of students to further their biotechnology education and career.
